Follow the Journey to my dream closet – Makeup Room & Closet Refit

Follow the Journey to my dream closet - Makeup Room & Closet Refit riamakeup.com

When we bought our new home, I couldn’t wait to start creating my dream makeup room & closet in our second bedroom. It had been on my to do list for a few years but I finally got around to bringing my vision to life this summer.

I was already using this room as a makeup and dressing room and trying to store all of my stuff but the space wasn’t cutting it as-is. It was disorganized, nothing had a home, and I had nowhere to store my clothes and not enough space to fit all of my makeup.

Before upgrades:

I did lots of research based on the space I had and decided on the Bestar Boutique Closet System. It was well reviewed, seemed sturdy and would give me the storage I needed. I added two IKEA Alex drawers with a Linmon table top to replace my previous IKEA Malm dressing table because it was too high to sit at comfortably for long periods doing my makeup.

I was planning on having two additional tall Alex drawers on either side of my dressing table for additional makeup storage but the Bestar closet ended up taking up too much space.

I’m so obsessed with the results!

Seriously, my dream closet 😍

I can’t wait to give you all an update once I have everything moved in and organized.

Exact items I purchased below:

Alex Drawers:

The Alex Drawers are a must have for your basic-bitch beauty room. Every Instagram beauty guru has these, so I figured I might as well jump on the bandwagon. These drawers are very deep and my only complaint is that they don’t open enough to see what’s stored all the way in the back. Assembling them can be done mostly on your own but it’s helpful to have a second person around to help with the construction.

Because the drawers are so deep and I have so many small pieces to store, I will probably have to invest in some drawer organizers at some point. I’m currently using pencil holders from the Dollar Store that are doing ok but I will likely want to upgrade in the future. *EDIT* After doing some research and asking around, I was told Sonny Cosmetics makes the best organizers for the Alex Drawers.

Linmon Table Top:

I wanted my Alex drawers to sit right against my closet pieces on either side and there was no Linmon table top that would fit those exact dimensions, so I added clear acrylic organizers on either side to fill the gaps. They do carry a good variety of sizes of these table tops so you can completely customize your workspace and get exactly what you are looking for. The other great thing about this setup is that if you somehow damage your table top you can easily replace it since you purchase each piece separately with IKEA.

Bestar Closet System:

The Bestar Corner Closet looks small in this photo and I was originally going to order the larger closet system but I am SO glad I read the measurements and planned before ordering because this system needs a whopping 12 feet of total wall space. It is also deeper than it appears and it sticks out 2 feet from the wall. This storage system takes up most of the space in my dressing room and I wouldn’t be able to fit any extra even if I wanted to. For reference, my makeup and dressing room measures at 12 x 9.5 feet.

Vanity Girl Hollywood Starlet Mirror:

I originally had a black Vanity Girl Hollywood mirror that I bought in 2012 and it works perfectly. It is now in my second makeup area downstairs. I replaced it with a silver mirror to coordinate with my updated decor. I am so happy with these mirrors, definitely worth it if you do your makeup on a regular basis. My boyfriend switched out the incandescent bulbs that came with the mirror for cooler, more energy efficient LED bulbs. These bulbs stay cool to the touch. I found the incandescent bulbs became too hot over time, especially if I was doing a more time consuming look or if it was during a particularly hot summer day. I highly recommend getting LED bulbs if you get one of these mirrors. They are so cheap these days too and will pay for themselves by reducing energy costs.

You can dim the bulbs on this mirror to your liking but I always do my makeup with them on the brightest setting.

I hope this gives you some ideas for your own makeup space… I would love to see your work area! Share your pictures with me in the comments below 😀
